CJO with Jon Faddis: ‘Miles Ahead’ and Frank Foster TributeNovember 2013 • Harris Theater • Chicago
The Chicago Jazz Orchestra Association presented Jon Faddis with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra conducted by Jeff Lindberg, in the Chicago premiere of Miles Davis/Gil Evans landmark work, Miles Ahead. Originally recorded by Davis with the Gil Evans Orchestra in 1957, this work was the first of the trumpeter’s three acclaimed collaborations with Gil Evans on Columbia Records (Porgy and Bess (1958) and Sketches of Spain (1960) being the other two). Faddis will perform the Miles Davis solo role, while Lindberg will conduct the 19-piece CJO performing the original scores obtained from Gil Evans’ son.
On the first half of the program the CJO will present a tribute to the great jazz composer and arranger Frank Foster, who passed away in 2011. The CJO will perform some of Foster’s classic compositions and arrangements as recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra, as well as works created later in Foster’s career.
